This significant alterations and additions project in Bellevue Hill overcame a difficult site surrounded by overlooking neighbours, complex Council development application negotiations, a natural spring below the building, a steep and restricted site, substantial underpinning and the global financial crisis. A combination of committed clients and dedicated meticulous builders produced an appropriately urban but luxurious building that responds in a sculptural way to its unusual site and the stone base of the existing house. The form cascades down the site. The materials lighten as they rise, culminating in the glazed access to the rooftop terrace: a lantern that brings natural daylight deep into the heart of the house. Beautifully crafted Spotted Gum windows and doors contrast against the zinc cladding skin that wraps around the dwelling.
